big mello - bone hard zaggin

curtis donald davis also known as "big mello" was a rapper from hiram clarke texas who dropped 4 albums before his untimely demise in 2002 due to the fact that he lost control of the vehicule he was driving (also desceased was another passanger who was in the car with him), 2 months after his death a 5th album dropped (the gift), although revered by his peers in his native texas big mello never became a household name outside of texas.

bone hard zaggin was mello's first album and was dropped on the south's at the time premiere label rap-a-lot, owned by lil j famous for dropping the world reknown 'geto boys' and for having a roster that showed much promess (scarface, big, mike, willie d, o.g style, choice, the terrorists, the south park coalition, ganxta nip,3-2, seagram (the only rapper on rap-a-lot from the west coast at the time and hailed from oakland and who was tragically murdered in the streets of his own city in 1996), too much trouble, geto twinz and so many more that they slip my mind at the moment, big mello came in with a laid back 'slo flo'and while he dropped albums after this one I personally must say that this I think is his best album, here is why:this is the album that put his name 'out there', now.....I'am not sayin this album bumps from begining to end but under the titulage of the rap-a-lot crew mello had a chance to work around some of the best rap-a-lot producers of the time (cliff blodget, jon bido, n.o and so many others that it is easy to forget due to the fact that they had such a huge camp).

this album is straight 'gangsta shit' from begining to end, just like any other rap-a-lot album of the time (except for og style's album whose album was the most east coast influenced of'em all), tracks like gank move, primetime live and love don't love nobody are just some of the standout cuts of the album (with gank move the one track that got the most bump out of my stereo),classic funk samples can be found on every single track throughout this whole album which means a really enjoyable sound if you are a funk lover like myself and if you like gangsta rap you must cop this.

kool g rap & dj polo - road to riches

it is hard to imagine that a legend like kool g rap has never went gold or anywhere near it.... just think....eric b hooked him up with dj polo, marley marl produced his shit, he was a member of the infamous juice crew, sir jinx of ice cube's lench mob produced his 3rd album, the large professor contributed beats for his 2nd album, he was sampled by bbd for their smash hit "poison", he was on the first posse cut ever (the symphony with big daddy kane-master ace and marley marl) he continues to drop material to this day, but all that doesn't make him a legend right?, how about this.... one night during their performance the late great big pun and fat joe spotted nathaniel wilson (aka. kool g rap) in attendance in the audience and big pun called him to the stage where he knelt down and kissed the hand of the man known as "the kool genious of rap", also known for bringin into the world of hip hop a young video vixen known by the name of kerrine steffans who in late 90's and early 2000's till now would be widely recognized as "the groupie for the hip hop stars" for fucking so many of them....yes you guessed it "superhead"...(but enough about her we're talking g rap here) this is the 1st album by g rap & his dj (dj polo who persued a acting carrer as a porn star when the group called it quits)...check this: I had a friend who would not listen to west coast hip hop at all because he said they had no lyrics that compete with new york so everything he bumped was east coast, one day I brought a new tape by a east coast rapper and threw it in the tape deck pressed play & bumped it, can you believe he told me he liked the beats but not the rapper who he took to be west coast ? you guessed it this is that album, a classic by any means.

epmd - strictly business

if you were around in '88 then you know this album was a must have...first person I can recall ever bumpin' epmd was my homie andy when they had just dropped the 12" single for you gots to chill and no one had really heard of them and then next thing you know tadow epmd is mentioned on the same lines as eric b & rakim & public enemy, erick sermon and parish smith formed this very talented duo hailing from brentwood new york (who's acronym stood for erick & parish makin' dollars before they changed it later on in their carrers to eric & parish millenium ducats), this album stands out for being their best work (although the latter albums were also dope none of them were as good as this one) here on this album we were introduced to the famous zapp & roger more bounce to the ounce sample that everybody seemed to want to sample after you gots to chill dropped and became such a huge hit for epmd, also......who do you know that can sample someone like eric clapton, zz top and steve miller and make it sound so funky that you forget the genre of the music from which they were samplin' from?, certified gold (although I'am sure they've sold a lot more since it's certification back in the days) this album truly captivates that newly harvested new york sound with a more funky twist, heavy on samples as any other album of the era but most of the samples used on this album had not been by any other artist on any other songs....in 1993 the duo called it quits (parish blamed erick for having his house burglarized and erick blamed parish for not giving him his proper share) having released 4 albums collectibly the now solo artists has no problem getting another record deal and each persued their solo carrers (which never really shined as when they were a group), the group did reunite for 3 more albums (back in business, out of business and 2008's we mean business) but this and their second (unfinished business) are the most memorable.

d - nice - call me d - nice

it is said that the reason that boogie down production's dj scott larock was murdered was because d-nice was messing with someone else's girl and the other dude had rolled up d- nice which caused scott & other folks to intervene and when they rolled up at the projects the other guy & his crew started blastin' taking the life of scott "larock" sterling (r.i.p)........d-nice better known for producing the self destruction" single dropped this album in 1990, the album boasts that "new york sound" full of 808 bass and dope beats along with perfectly crafted rhymes (I do not know why I always compare nas to d-nice being that they sound nothing alike and their style is totally different), stand out tracks on this album are "glory" which is a track dedicated to that famous 54th platoon and their story in the military (remember glory the movie with denzel washington?) "crumbs on the table", "it's over", "it's all about me" and call me d-nice, although a member of bdp this album is more street oriented than most bdp releases, a true east coast classic in it's own right, although d-nice went on to drop another album (25 to life) it never quite did or sounded as good as call me d-nice.

1 crumbs on the table
2 call me d nice
3 glory
4 the tr 808 is coming
5 under some buddah
6 it's over
7 few dollars more
8 it's all about me
9 pimp of the year

dr. dre - you got ganked (mixed tape)

for this next album I will not use a picture, tracklisting or a video because they do not exist, mind you I'am not a big fan of mixed tapes this one is a exception because it's so old and it's mixed by non other than andre young.....yes dr. dre...... I recall first hearing this in '89 from my buddy javier who had gotten a dub from his partner earl (I still remember the first words on the tape "you got ganked ain't nothin' on this tape...didn't you read the title stupid?", mixed live at the roadium swapmeet in gardena california this mixed tape features tracks by audio 2, sweet tee, nwa, derek b and many more (too many to type).....now a days you have so many mixed cd's and really no dj's scratchin' (like joe cooley said "ain't scratchin' nothin' but they ass") due to the fact that vinyl is so scarse due to the powers that be and the change of times (even when some dj's drop a oldschool mixed cd and know that scratching is the essence of oldschool rap they refuse to scratch on their vinyl because now "it's a collector's item" and I can't really blame'em because there are some records that are very rare but you loose that "olskool" feel) here on this tape the good ol'e doctor really puts his technic 1200's to work....the album is split into 2 sections side a - side b (it's off a cassette tape after all) my personal favorite is side a because that's the side that I always bumped on my old ass walkman..........check this album out because it's not everyday you get to hear the good ol'e doctor doin' what he did best.....cuttin' shit up and because it captures that "real oldskool" vibe that you could only get at from a "real dj" like dre and a oldskool tape.

arabian prince - brother arab

the 6th man on n.w.a.'s album cover released this classic west coast album in 1989 on orpheus/capitol records but had been producing since the mid 80's for the likes of bobby jimmy & the critters and working with the wrecking crew & the egyptian lover, I have yet to understand why brother arab did not push more units than it did?, the album features that classic west coast feel but not as gangsta as say...nwa,king tee, ice t....(gangsta light comes to mind) being that arabian prince was a "electro" beat maker this album has a wide variety of tracks some about partying some about sex some about and of course gangsta (sans all the killing), overall a good album for it's time (although at times the beats are better than the lyrics) worth checking out.
